Er ist der größte Popstar der Türkei - aber Charterfolge bedeuten ihm zurzeit wenig. Im SPIEGEL-ONLINE-Interview erklärt Tarkan, wie sich Deutschland in die Zerstörung anatolischer Kulturgüter verstrickt und warum er gegen Staudämme kämpft.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Was treibt den bekanntesten Popsänger der Türkei dazu, zum Anti-Staudamm-Aktivisten zu werden?
Tarkan: Ich bin nicht blind für die Verbrechen gegen die Natur. Die Türkei ist reich an wunderschönen Orten und Landschaften, die sollten wir nicht opfern im Namen eines angeblichen Fortschritts. Und die türkische Umweltbewegung inspiriert mich. Diese Leute sind absolut leidenschaftlich. Die lieben, was sie tun.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Haben Sie schon Premierminister Erdogan getroffen? Er hat die Gegner des umstrittenen "Ilisu"-Damms als Terroristen bezeichnet.
Tarkan: Bis jetzt konnte ich nur den Kulturminister treffen. Aber ich habe Abdullah Gül, unserem Präsidenten, einen Brief geschrieben. Ich habe mit meiner Unterschrift gegen den Damm protestiert. Wenn die Politiker nervös werden, zeigt dass doch, dass unsere Kampagne Eindruck macht.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Die Regierung argumentiert, dass der Damm Entwicklung bedeutet, dass er Arbeitsplätze schafft.
Tarkan: Aber zu welchem Preis? Die antike Stadt Hasankeyf ist über 10.000 Jahre alt. Wir kämpfen gerade dafür, es zum Unesco-Weltkulturerbe zu erklären. Es ist unfair, so eine unglaubliche Schönheit zu zerstören. Man muss andere Wege finden, um dem Südosten ökonomisch auf die Beine zu helfen. Diese Gegend ist einfach ideal für den Tourismus.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Möglicherweise entscheiden sich Deutschland und die anderen Geldgeber, aus dem Projekt auszusteigen. Sie werden an diesem Donnerstag nach Berlin fliegen. Was ist Ihre Botschaft an die Deutschen?
Tarkan: Meine Botschaft ist: Hört auf mit dem Wahnsinn. Würdet ihr ein Weltkulturerbe zerstören, wenn es in eurem eigenen Land wäre? Ich glaube nicht.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Sie haben einen Song für Hasankeyf geschrieben. Vielleicht schafft der es auch in die deutschen Charts.
Tarkan: Das Lied heißt "Uyan", "Wach auf". Es geht dabei aber nicht nur um Hasankeyf. Es geht um unseren ganzen Planeten. Meine Landsleute sollen merken, dass sie dabei sind, den eigenen Ast abzusägen, auf dem sie sitzen.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Und? Wachen die Türken auf?
Tarkan: Ich glaube, meine Fans tun das. Ich kriege jede Menge Briefe und E-Mails, da heißt es: Du hast mich inspiriert, ich will auch etwas für die Umwelt tun, ich will auch ein Hybridauto fahren. Oft sind es nur kleine Dinge, wie keinen Müll auf die Straße zu schmeißen, den Wasserhahn nicht unnötig laufen zu lassen und so. Aber das sind ja alles noch keine Selbstverständlichkeiten in meinem Land.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Sie fahren ein Hybridauto?
Tarkan: Ja, unglaublich oder? Ich war der Erste in der Türkei. Das Ding stand eine Ewigkeit im Zoll, weil die Beamten nicht wussten, was sie da vor sich hatten (lacht).
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Glauben Sie eigentlich noch an die Europäische Union? Sollte die Türkei Mitglied sein?
Tarkan: Ich wünsche mir das, ja. Aber noch mehr wünsche ich mir, dass wir aus eigener Kraft stark werden. Dass wir keine Geldspritzen aus dem Ausland brauchen und dass wir nicht glauben, unsere Natur ausverkaufen zu müssen. Ich bin ein großer Fan von Europa. Aber wenn das nichts mehr wird, ist das auch keine Katastrophe.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Sie haben selber Wurzeln in Europa.
Tarkan: Ja, ich bin in Rheinland-Pfalz geboren.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Fühlen Sie sich als "Deutschtürke"?
Tarkan: Keine Ahnung. Komischer Begriff. Meine Freunde nennen mich manchmal so: Alamanci. Aber mir ist das eigentlich egal. Ich würde mich eher als Türken bezeichnen, der in Deutschland aufgewachsen ist.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Also keine Identitätskrise?
Tarkan: Nein, woher auch. Für mich ist es ein Reichtum, zwischen zwei Kulturen zu stehen. Es hat mich viel gelehrt in Deutschland aufzuwachsen. Ich bin Weltbürger, ich kann mich heute gut anpassen, egal wo ich bin. Auch wenn es nicht immer einfach war. Ich erinnere mich an die "Türken raus"-Sprüche. Aber das ist nicht die wichtigste Erinnerung aus Deutschland. Meine deutschen Freunde, die Musik, Nena, Falco, Trio, das ist wichtiger.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Ganz so einfach ist es aber immer noch nicht, das Verhältnis zwischen Deutschen und Türken.
Tarkan: Kann sein, aber das liegt dann eher an den Politikern oder an einer Politik, die falsche Zeichen setzt. Die Menschen, wenn sie sich besser kennen lernen, kommen meistens ziemlich gut miteinander aus. Ich verstehe nicht, warum andere Kulturen Angst machen sollten. Rassismus ist Nonsens. Die Deutschen sollten sich daran erinnern, dass sie ihr Wirtschaftswunder auch den Türken zu verdanken haben. Und die Türken sollten aus ihrem Ghetto rauskommen.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Eine Identifikationsfigur für die deutsch-türkische Freundschaft gibt es schon: Tarkan.
Tarkan: Vielen Dank! Stimmt schon, ich habe viele Fans in Deutschland.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Jenseits von Tarkan können die meisten Deutschen allerdings wenig anfangen mit türkischer Musik.
Tarkan: Das ist verständlich. Die türkische Musikkultur ist eine komplett andere. Obwohl sie sehr reich ist: Es gibt Folklore, Klassik, religiöse Musik und ziemlich guten HipHop. Und die meisten Deutschen lieben Bauchtanz, vor allem die Frauen!
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Was ist Ihr größter Traum für die Türkei?
Tarkan: Ich wünsche mir, dass mein Land wirtschaftlich stark genug ist, um seine Natur nicht opfern zu müssen. Dass wir umweltfreundlicher werden, sensibler und friedlicher. Dass es in einem Jahrzehnt keine Diskriminierung und keinen Terrorismus mehr bei uns gibt. Das ist mein Traum.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: What made the best-known pop singer in Turkey to be one of the anti-dam activists?
Tarkan: I am not blind to the crimes against nature. Turkey is rich in beautiful places and landscapes that we should not sacrifice on behalf of alleged progress. And the Turkish environmental movement inspired me. These people are absolutely passionate. The love what they do.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Have you ever met Prime Minister Erdogan? He has described the opponents of the controversial "Ilisu" Dam as terrorists.
Tarkan: Until now I could only meet the Minister of Culture. But I have sent Abdullah Gül, our President, a letter. I have protested against the dam with my own signature. If the politicians are nervous, it means that they are watching our campaign.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: The Government argues that the dam development will create jobs.
Tarkan: But at what price? The ancient city of Hasankeyf is over 10,000 years old. We just fight for it the Unesco World Heritage Site to explain. It is unfair to destroy such an incredible beauty. We must find other ways to put the south-east economy on its feet. This area is ideal for tourism.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You may choose to exclude Germany and other donors (money givers) from the project. They will fly to Berlin this Thursday. What is your message to the Germans?
Tarkan: My message is: Stop the madness. Would you destroy a World Heritage, if it was in your own country? I don't think so.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You have written a song for Hasankeyf. Perhaps it also appear in the German charts.
Tarkan: The song is called "Uyan", "Wake up". It's about our whole planet. My fellow countrymen should realize what they are sitting on.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: And? Did the Turks wake up?
Tarkan: I think my fans did, because I get lots of letters and e-mails saying: You have inspired me, I want to do something for the environment, I want a hybrid car. Often there are only small things, like not to throw garbage on the streets, not to run the faucet unnecessarily, and so on. But those are all still not self-understandings in my own country.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You drive a hybrid car?
Tarkan: Yes, incredible, is it not? I was the first in Turkey. Das Ding stand eine Ewigkeit im Zoll, weil die Beamten nicht wussten, was sie da vor sich hatten (lacht). The thing was that it stood an eternity in customs, because the officials did not know what they had to do (laughs).
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you actually still believe in the European Union? Should Turkey be a member?
Tarkan: I hope that, yes. But even more, I hope that we are strong on our own. The fact that we need no cash injections from abroad and that we do not believe our nature is for sale. I am a big fan of Europe. But if nothing more is possible, this is also not a disaster.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You have roots in Europe itself.
Tarkan: Yes, i was born in the Rheinland Palatine.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you feel as a "German Turk"?
Tarkan: I do not know. Comic notion. My friends sometimes call me so: Alamanci. But I actually do not care. I would rather be called a Turk who grew up in Germany.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: So no identity crisis?
Tarkan: No, where from?. For me it is an enrichment(asset) to be between two cultures. Growing up in Germany has taught me a lot. I am a citizenof the world, I can now adjust well, no matter where I am. Even if it is not always easy. I remember the "Turks out" sayings. But this is not the most important memory from Germany. My German friends, the music, Nena, Falco, Trio, these are more important.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: But still the relatipnship between Germans and Turks it's not quite so simple.
Tarkan: Maybe, but it is more likely to have the politicians sign the wrong policy. The people, when they want to know you better, are usually fair with each other. I do not understand why other cultures should be frightening. Racism is nonsense. Die Deutschen sollten sich daran erinnern, dass sie ihr Wirtschaftswunder auch den Türken zu verdanken haben. The Germans should remember that their economic miracle is owed to the Turks. And the Turks should get out of their ghetto.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: An identification figure for the German-Turkish friendship exists already: Tarkan.
Tarkan: Thank you! True, I have many fans in Germany.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Appart from Tarkan however, most Germans have little to do with Turkish music.
Tarkan: That's understandable. The Turkish music culture is completely different. Although it is very rich: there is folk, classical, religious music and pretty good hip-hop. And most Germans love belly dancing, especially the women!
SPIEGEL ONLINE: What is your biggest dream for Turkey?
Tarkan: I wish that my country is economically strong enough not to have to sacrifice the nature. The fact that we are environmentally friendly, sensitive and peaceful. That in a decade, no discrimination and no more terrorism will exist for us. That is my dream.
