TURKA Events organizes on Easter Sunday, April 8th, 2012 the Turkish Festival in Dortmund, Germany. The Turka Festival 2012 will be conducted in the Dortmund Westphalia Hallen on four different stages in four halls, with an accompanying exhibition.

My dears, as 2012 begins, i need to step in front and tell you how sorry i am for not keeping the blog and the facebook page up to date with all the magnificent events and news in our world...the Tarkan world. Ever since June, a lot of things have happened in my life, some pleasant, others very sad and painful, and this is why it was difficult for me to regain the strength, the enthusiasm and the passion that i was investing when sharing all those wonderful things with you. But now i am back, and exactly as i am confident that Tarkan will kick ass in 2012 (celebrating 20 years of career), i promise you i will be here to tell you what's up, when it's up, so that you guys are the first to know what's going on in this magnificent world of ours.

TARKANInternational meeting Amsterdam-Dusseldorf 2011- Live the magic!

It all started when the European Tour was officially announced…I, Octavia, head of TarkanROMANIA, admin of Tarkan’s World and unofficial event organizer at TarkanInternational, said “hey!!! 2 concerts in a row, Amsterdam and Dusseldorf…and would ya’ look at that, right for Easter! A meeting would be the perfect gift from the bunny!”…took me a little more than 2 hours to realize I could never do it alone (unless I wanted grey hairs, an ulcer and a lifetime subscription for valium), so I asked Marleen, owner of TarkanCLUB, to help me with organizing the entire madness…(Marleen, I am forever grateful for all your help, for wanting to make this experience together with me come true for 18 people…we rocked girl!!!)

3 months later I was landing in Amsterdam and she was picking me up from the airport…everything was ready, we had a schedule, and we were determined to stick to it! We had 21 participants from 10 countries flying, driving, walking in Amsterdam for what turned out to be one of the most fun meetings of all time. We had all the promotion done over internet, we had the materials ready, reservations done, mobiles charged, lists in our pockets…we were sooooooo ready! So here we gooooo!!!

First day, first participants arrive…we have a nice dinner, after settling in the apartment that some of us shared, we had a nice kinky walk thru Red Light district, Dam square and Niewmarkt.

Second day, more participants arrive; we visit the Beginenhof and do a bit of shopping on Kalverstraat. So far so good, sticking to the schedule. But since all that’s good doesn’t last long, we find out that one of the participants and apartment mates has trouble and is a bit lost, so there I go, taking a short trip to the airport J at this point we are behind with the schedule, but doesn’t really matter, as long as we have fun and we’re still in a good spirit. After the participant is retrieved, we head on for a late lunch, and another round of shopping for souvenirs…and then some freshen up, and the dinner with everyone is about to start. We all meet in a nice downtown restaurant, Argentinean of course, booked especially for our meeting, we hug, we drink, we eat, we have pictures taken, we share with everyone the news and excitement of the upcoming meeting and concert, and of course the gifts and everything we had prepared for them. Also, we show the banner that we will display at the meeting and concerts, and we show the book that Tarkan will receive as a gift.

It’s really wonderful to meet with people from France, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, USA, Romania, Brazil…and many times I wonder if Tarkan ever realizes how many people he has united, how many people are friends because they love his music, how many adventures and funny times we have, all because of him!

And just about when we were falling asleep and honestly considering the thought of going “home” and get into our beds…a warm, happy and loud voice fills the room! “soooo, where’s the party?!?!” Can Sengun asks. It was the band and they were so kind to respond to my invitation and drop by for a drink with us…my absolute surprise for the participants to the meeting J my blood started moving again, the adrenaline was being pumped into every cell of my body, I was awake and happy, so happy to see the amazement on everyone’s face, the surprise worked like a charm! And it was not just a s surprise for the participants, as there were some surprises involved for the band as well…couldn’t let them walk out of there without seeing everything that was prepared, and without some Tarkan merchandise…and of course a good round of pictures and fun. Night ends with a walk throughout Amsterdam, stopping at some terraces, to have a drink, singing Tarkan songs on the empty streets of Amsterdam! It is my absolute belief that one can do this only in a foreign city, and only in such company as Tarkan fans. It’s something that’s always remembered as fun, not as crazy, no matter how crazy and outrageous it seems to outsiders.

Third day, the BIG day…we try to fill it with a boat ride which fails, as the queue was too big, so we do some walking in Joordan. Going back to get all dolled up and take all the stuff for the meeting, finally getting into the subway and heading for the Heineken Music Hall. Final reunion takes place, our group is complete and there we are, all ready for the meet&greet, as initially established with the organizers. It’s another hot day in Amsterdam, and it becomes even hotter as we wait for the planned things to happen, and as we foresee a beautiful, loud, hot, unforgettable night ahead!

The meet&greet takes place a bit later than planned (but then again by this time we were so behind with the schedule, that it was impossible to recover anything from it, so we had to refold, and step to schedule B J ). First we are invited backstage, everyone is so anxious, especially the newbies, they are like stepping on hot coals, it’s lovely to see the emotions in their eyes, to watch them trying to smile but they are so nervous deep down, that it’s impossible to relax. Reminds me of my first meet&greet, when it seemed that it was just me & Tarkan and everything other was left outside this invisible capsule that we were in…beautiful feeling, a memory that will never fade… in the end we are invited upstairs, into his cabin, and although 5 minutes are stolen from our time, everything goes as well as it could go under the circumstances. We say hello, have a small chat (we ourselves were surprised that HE brought up the trial thing, and turns out everything is political and they are just trying to shut him up…and most probably he was unsure of everything and wanted to see our reaction, but what other reaction could we have, other than support him for what he speaks up?!). Then follow the hugs and we have some pictures taken, give him the book and do the surprise happy birthday for the 2 birthday girls that we had in our group (and Tarkan sings along!) and then it’s time for the final group picture (for which his photographer really made an effort to fit us all in the picture, and there were a couple of minutes of instructions (“there is an invisible line here, please align to it” :P:P:P) and final hugs and bye-byes…and off we are, in the concert hall. Although the meetings are rather short these days, and it’s definitely not enough time to say everything you ever wanted to say, somehow when one is in the same room with HIM, all time stops, everything freezes, and all one can see is his smile, what he says, his look and his reaction to the natural way the conversation flows.

Concert was…amazing. Starts with some energy of Acimayacak, fills the hall with Dudu rhythms, rocks the crowd with a “cat and mouse game” between Tarkan and the guitar players, mainly Can Sengun, in Olurum Sana, makes everyone bounce with Hup and Bu Gece, then we go for a teary, emotional and extremely sensitive part of the show, the acounstic medley, which includes older songs like Ince Tenm, Ikimizin Yerine, Don Bebegim, …after which, a nice surprise is revealed, in an extraordinary performance of Altay Oktar, the backing vocals, who does a great “Don’t Leave Me Alone”…Tarkan returns and wakes everyone up with the Op march, and a smoky Kuzu Kuzu, gives everyone a bit of Simarik and of Shikidim and as the spring blooms in all our hearts with Isim Olmaz, he makes the audience beg for more, giving an encore of Usta Cirak and Adimi Kalbine Yaz. It’s difficult to remember all the songs or the exact order, but each performance is even greater as it is filled with dancing (from both his and our side), fun, singing along and not to mention being noticed (thanks to the big banner) and receiving lots of kisses and great looks. Even thought the concert fills us up with energy to last a lifetime, physically we are wasted afterwards. We turn into some old ladies who can barely move, not to mention yours truly lost her voice somewhere in there…

We say goodbye to some of the participants who could be there just for the concert, due to several reasons…but for most of us, the night is still young, so we head back to the rented apartment for our own afterparty…drinks and deep picture and video analysis of the entire show, of the meet&greet, of the entire day. A perfect day, with an expected yet spectacular ending!

Fourth day, Easter day! We are yet again behind with the schedule, which in the end we decide to drop, as it is obvious that as long as Tarkan is in our schedule, there can be nothing else planned. We try to pack as fast as we can in order to quickly move to Dusseldorf, as in the evening the next concert is there. Pack, pack, pack, hurry, hurry, hurry…those were the words of the day. We eventually got to Dusseldorf late in the afternoon, so we just freshened up a bit and rushed across the street to the concert hall. It was announcing to be a full one this time. A long line of people, as far as the eye could see, was filling the square in front of the ISS Dome. Security was really strict, and I must say, for the first time in my experience, I got in thru the front door…bye bye water bottle, hello strip search. Concert was as good as the one in Amsterdam, only the Kuzu Kuzu dance was even hotter this time, it actually had the flames (in Amsterdam it had just the smoke), plus Tarkan did a nice surprise to the entire audience, by choosing to sing Uzun ince bir Yoldayim. And the entire audience sand with him…it was a great moment, really touching. Other funny happenings of the evening were the fact that he rolled on the floor, literally, before the end of the show (see pictures on TarkanOnline) and also the fact that at the encore, when he sang Usta Cirak, his voice sounded really weird…and I have heard it was not the first time that happened, as it had happened also in Paris. On a recording it’s not noticeable, but live…sorry to say it, he sounded like a smurf! Probably someone was playing too much with the sound effects. It was funny though. I would say this concert was even better than the Amsterdam one, but then again all concerts are great.

The next day I thought it would finally be a relaxing day…started out like one, ended out just like one…the beginning part of the middle of the day however wasn’t… just when I was enjoying a Starbucks coffee on Konigsallee in Dusseldorf, I got a message to go pick up the autograph cards, which were left for Tarkan to sign with his assistant in Amsterdam, and which we thought, to be honest, that they were lost and would never be recovered again (with all the madness and rush that took place in the 2 concert days). So there I am, rushing towards their hotel, luckily getting there just when they were leaving, enough time to say good bye and thank yous and wish everyone a great tour ahead. Heading towards the reception desk to pick up what was a green file, I couldn’t help wondering how it would have been if I was there 5 minutes earlier. The nice receptionist asked me for my passport, to make sure I was who I was supposed to be, he carefully looked at both my passport and a note on the green file, and after boiling me a bit, he gave me the file and wished me a good day. As I was opening the file to see if everything was in there, he reassured me that I didn’t have to worry as everything was in there, so my natural question was “how do you know what is in here?!”…I felt like I was holding pure gold in my hands, and there he was, this reception gentleman, knowing the dark secret of the green file! Well, he was kind enough to explain how he came about to the secret of the file, as apparently Tarkan spent 15 minutes in the lobby signing them just a bit earlier that morning.

So there I was, walking thru Dusseldorf, with Tarkan’s autographs in my backpack, and a huge grin on my face, texting people to tell them I had them! Happiness was in the air. And I suppose that was the moment when my actual holiday started. I enjoyed a lot a climb in the terrifying Rheinturm (fear of height, what can you do?!), and then a loooooong walk thru the Media Hafen with it’s modern architecture, onto the Rhein Promenade, to Altstadt, where we were so tired and hungry that we just crashed a terrace and had the most horrible food in my life…it was typical German food, and I was hungry enough to eat anything at that point, but now that I think of it, it wasn’t that good at all. No offence…beef with raisins sauce?! Night ended decently with sending Marleen back home to Belgium, and then having a nice strol thru Konigsallee at night, ending with getting lost trying to find the Haupbahnhof, where we wanted to eat some kebab. After 3 hours of strolling, we managed to reach our target (it is my belief that we just went in circles, being too busy singing Tarkan songs, and discussing Tarkan related stuff).

Last day in Dusseldorf…a visit to the Aquazoo, where they had the funniest penguins ever! And some other stuff, but the penguins were the kings of the place for sure. Then another walk thru downtown, a bit of shopping, enjoyed (finally) a relaxed Starbucks coffee on a terrace…and a beautiful unforgettable end of the day with a nice walk thru Altstadt, spent the evening on a terrace on the Rhein Promenade, and just talked for hours about Tarkan, about fans, about life…got a beautiful view of the Rheinturm at night, froze a bit, as it was windy and rather chilly, and ended the night with some other Tarkan songs on the lonely streets of Dusseldorf.

And this is how our meeting ends…now that we have been together, again, we will continue to nourish our addiction for this phenomenon called Tarkan, because Tarkan is what brought us together, he is the reason we met and the reason why every time we meet again and again we have so much fun together…he is the common link between people who are on different continents, people from all social classes, with all types of jobs…we are all so different, we would each be unique if it wouldn’t be for Tarkan to be the invisible chain that ties us all together.

Tarkan doubled National Geographic documentary on the great migration

National Geographic Channel, the largest channel of this type in Turkey, famous for the production of a documentary on the Great Migration will broadcast on 7 November 2010 this documentary all around Turkey.
The documentary reffers to many animal species, and the voice on this documentary series was performed by Tarkan.
The great interest and love of nature and animals, human nature, giving something back to the nature and respecting the rights of the animals, these were the guidelines for Tarkan in his journey in Kenya between September 26 to October 5.
The "Great Migration" is a documentary shot in Kenya in order to monitor the process of other species. Tarkan and the documentary team followed them around this magical journey and were able to catch on their lenses the beauty of the journey. They also visited nature camps in Kenya's Masai Mara National Geographic Society.

Harbiye 2010 overview

Last nigth in Istanbul took place the last concert of the Harbiye series for this year. 2010 was a fantastic year with 8 concerts in this location, gathering more than 55000 people. Technical details include 210 square metres of LED screen for the stage, the screen images were especially designed for each song, the lighting system was programmed for fast moves according to the coreography of each song (both the lighting system and the screen images- that were actually reflected lights integrated into the screen-were used for the first time in Turkey), 40 tons of stage lights were used.
Moreover, last night's concert was trully memorable. Tarkan's mother was in the first row and he dedicated the song Uzun Ince bir Yoldayim to her.

new album blows up the music market

The new Tarkan album, Adimi Kalbine Yaz (Step into the Heart of Summer) has sold 307500 copies in 20 days, producing a revenue of 4.5 million TL (approx. 2.25 million Euros).

The recently released album is definatelly breaking sales records. Tarkan has expressed the hope that the album will reach 500000 copies sold by the end of the month, which will actually happen, taking into account the trend so far.

But, most important, tarkan.com features now a T-zone intended for fans, and a mention on the bottom of the page of the official fanclubs, facebook, twitter and myspace pages.

Tarkan @ Harbiye Açıkhava Tiyatrosu

Last night the opening concert of the Harbiye series took place. Tarkan presented his album, Adimi Kalbine Yaz (Step into the heart of summer) to an audience of 6500. Although the theater has only 5000 seats, and all the tickets were sold to the last one, the organisers decideed to give tickets also for the extra space, that is the stairs of the theater.

Hurriyet writes that the concert was outstanding and that for the concert of tonight also all tickets were sold.

Also, Hurriyet notes that fans held us a banner saying: "Tarkan, you've captured us! We've written your name across our hearts!"This was the banner of our colleague club, Tarkanclub, also part of TarkanInternational! :)

As per the above mentioned paper, Adimi Kalbine Yaz from the album with the same name is certainly the most popular song at the moment.

Question: Why are we obsessed with Turkish pop legend Tarkan? Answer: Deemed the "Prince of Pop" and the Turkish Elvis, the international musical phenomenon is also a friend to animals. He took time out of his hectic schedule to pose with Penny, a PETA staff member's rescued pooch, and to urge people to help control the animal overpopulation crisis by having their animal companions spayed or neutered. Check out his new ad and an interview he did with PETA Germany:

When did PETA first enter your life?
During the promotional tour for my album Come Closer, PETA reached out to me to voice feelings about my wearing a fur coat on the album cover. Having been an animal lover since childhood, this instance when I was pictured wearing fur on the cover of my album was truly a regrettable one. On the day of my album's cover shoot, we tested many looks, one of which happened to include a coat with fur accents. The pictures ended up being used as the album's cover artwork. In hindsight, I wish I had never worn the coat—but I am also a believer that everything in life happens for a reason. Because of that mistake, PETA and I crossed paths, joined forces, and are now working together to protect animal rights worldwide. Once all the unimaginable circumstances being suffered by helpless animals were brought to my attention and I saw footage portraying the horrible pain that animals were enduring for the sake of fashion, I immediately swore off fur.

What do you think of PETA?
I am happy to be supporting PETA—an organization that's fighting for animal rights worldwide. PETA's relentless efforts to protect the well-being of animals around the world is a cause that is very important to me.

How do you think we can make animals' lives better? Do you think that the existing campaigns are enough?
I am fortunate enough to be able to use my celebrity to draw attention to PETA and to encourage my fans to join the animal rights movement. I feel it is up to all of us to take a stand as consumers and choose a cruelty-free lifestyle. Once we stop encouraging industries that are making a profit at the expense of animals, we will end the demand and make a change for animals worldwide.

Do you think that celebrities are doing enough to protect the rights of animals in Turkey?
There have been many celebrities in Turkey who have spoken out for animal rights, including my dear friend, Sezen Aksu, who is both an animal lover and an activist. I hope that with this campaign, more of my colleagues, friends, and fans will be inspired to voice their support for animal rights.

How did you find your dogs?
Over the last few years, I have rescued approximately a dozen dogs from the streets of Turkey. Some were brought to me by friends, and some have even shown up at my doorstep looking for a home. They have brought me endless joy, and I treasure their unconditional love.

How many dogs do you have, and where do they live?
I currently have four dogs (all rescued), named Efe, Carmella, Johnita, and Jackie. They all live with me at my ranch just outside Istanbul.

Do you have a favorite among them? Why?
I love all my dogs, as each has his or her own unique character. But Johnita is very special to me—she is the one who never leaves my side, no matter what.

Tell us a story about you and one of your dogs.
I used to have a dog named Efe, who I loved—and who passed away. Just a week later, a stray dog who almost identically resembled Efe showed up at my doorstep. I immediately welcomed him into my family and named him Efe as well.

How is your life nowadays? What is the latest with you?
I am currently in the studio working on my new album. In my free time, I like to work with many nonprofit organizations such as Doğa Derneği (Nature Foundation), UNICEF, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and more, to use my voice for change. But most of all, I am happy to be able to come home to my loving companions at the end of a long day at the studio.

TÜRKISCHER POPSTAR TARKAN

"Hört auf mit dem Wahnsinn!"

Er ist der größte Popstar der Türkei - aber Charterfolge bedeuten ihm zurzeit wenig. Im SPIEGEL-ONLINE-Interview erklärt Tarkan, wie sich Deutschland in die Zerstörung anatolischer Kulturgüter verstrickt und warum er gegen Staudämme kämpft.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Was treibt den bekanntesten Popsänger der Türkei dazu, zum Anti-Staudamm-Aktivisten zu werden?

Tarkan: Ich bin nicht blind für die Verbrechen gegen die Natur. Die Türkei ist reich an wunderschönen Orten und Landschaften, die sollten wir nicht opfern im Namen eines angeblichen Fortschritts. Und die türkische Umweltbewegung inspiriert mich. Diese Leute sind absolut leidenschaftlich. Die lieben, was sie tun.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Haben Sie schon Premierminister Erdogan getroffen? Er hat die Gegner des umstrittenen "Ilisu"-Damms als Terroristen bezeichnet.

Tarkan: Bis jetzt konnte ich nur den Kulturminister treffen. Aber ich habe Abdullah Gül, unserem Präsidenten, einen Brief geschrieben. Ich habe mit meiner Unterschrift gegen den Damm protestiert. Wenn die Politiker nervös werden, zeigt dass doch, dass unsere Kampagne Eindruck macht.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Die Regierung argumentiert, dass der Damm Entwicklung bedeutet, dass er Arbeitsplätze schafft.

Tarkan: Aber zu welchem Preis? Die antike Stadt Hasankeyf ist über 10.000 Jahre alt. Wir kämpfen gerade dafür, es zum Unesco-Weltkulturerbe zu erklären. Es ist unfair, so eine unglaubliche Schönheit zu zerstören. Man muss andere Wege finden, um dem Südosten ökonomisch auf die Beine zu helfen. Diese Gegend ist einfach ideal für den Tourismus.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Möglicherweise entscheiden sich Deutschland und die anderen Geldgeber, aus dem Projekt auszusteigen. Sie werden an diesem Donnerstag nach Berlin fliegen. Was ist Ihre Botschaft an die Deutschen?

Tarkan: Meine Botschaft ist: Hört auf mit dem Wahnsinn. Würdet ihr ein Weltkulturerbe zerstören, wenn es in eurem eigenen Land wäre? Ich glaube nicht.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Sie haben einen Song für Hasankeyf geschrieben. Vielleicht schafft der es auch in die deutschen Charts.

Tarkan: Das Lied heißt "Uyan", "Wach auf". Es geht dabei aber nicht nur um Hasankeyf. Es geht um unseren ganzen Planeten. Meine Landsleute sollen merken, dass sie dabei sind, den eigenen Ast abzusägen, auf dem sie sitzen.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Und? Wachen die Türken auf?

Tarkan: Ich glaube, meine Fans tun das. Ich kriege jede Menge Briefe und E-Mails, da heißt es: Du hast mich inspiriert, ich will auch etwas für die Umwelt tun, ich will auch ein Hybridauto fahren. Oft sind es nur kleine Dinge, wie keinen Müll auf die Straße zu schmeißen, den Wasserhahn nicht unnötig laufen zu lassen und so. Aber das sind ja alles noch keine Selbstverständlichkeiten in meinem Land.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Sie fahren ein Hybridauto?

Tarkan: Ja, unglaublich oder? Ich war der Erste in der Türkei. Das Ding stand eine Ewigkeit im Zoll, weil die Beamten nicht wussten, was sie da vor sich hatten (lacht).

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Glauben Sie eigentlich noch an die Europäische Union? Sollte die Türkei Mitglied sein?

Tarkan: Ich wünsche mir das, ja. Aber noch mehr wünsche ich mir, dass wir aus eigener Kraft stark werden. Dass wir keine Geldspritzen aus dem Ausland brauchen und dass wir nicht glauben, unsere Natur ausverkaufen zu müssen. Ich bin ein großer Fan von Europa. Aber wenn das nichts mehr wird, ist das auch keine Katastrophe.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Sie haben selber Wurzeln in Europa.

Tarkan: Ja, ich bin in Rheinland-Pfalz geboren.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Fühlen Sie sich als "Deutschtürke"?

Tarkan: Keine Ahnung. Komischer Begriff. Meine Freunde nennen mich manchmal so: Alamanci. Aber mir ist das eigentlich egal. Ich würde mich eher als Türken bezeichnen, der in Deutschland aufgewachsen ist.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Also keine Identitätskrise?

Tarkan: Nein, woher auch. Für mich ist es ein Reichtum, zwischen zwei Kulturen zu stehen. Es hat mich viel gelehrt in Deutschland aufzuwachsen. Ich bin Weltbürger, ich kann mich heute gut anpassen, egal wo ich bin. Auch wenn es nicht immer einfach war. Ich erinnere mich an die "Türken raus"-Sprüche. Aber das ist nicht die wichtigste Erinnerung aus Deutschland. Meine deutschen Freunde, die Musik, Nena, Falco, Trio, das ist wichtiger.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Ganz so einfach ist es aber immer noch nicht, das Verhältnis zwischen Deutschen und Türken.

Tarkan: Kann sein, aber das liegt dann eher an den Politikern oder an einer Politik, die falsche Zeichen setzt. Die Menschen, wenn sie sich besser kennen lernen, kommen meistens ziemlich gut miteinander aus. Ich verstehe nicht, warum andere Kulturen Angst machen sollten. Rassismus ist Nonsens. Die Deutschen sollten sich daran erinnern, dass sie ihr Wirtschaftswunder auch den Türken zu verdanken haben. Und die Türken sollten aus ihrem Ghetto rauskommen.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Eine Identifikationsfigur für die deutsch-türkische Freundschaft gibt es schon: Tarkan.

Tarkan: Vielen Dank! Stimmt schon, ich habe viele Fans in Deutschland.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Jenseits von Tarkan können die meisten Deutschen allerdings wenig anfangen mit türkischer Musik.

Tarkan: Das ist verständlich. Die türkische Musikkultur ist eine komplett andere. Obwohl sie sehr reich ist: Es gibt Folklore, Klassik, religiöse Musik und ziemlich guten HipHop. Und die meisten Deutschen lieben Bauchtanz, vor allem die Frauen!

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Was ist Ihr größter Traum für die Türkei?

Tarkan: Ich wünsche mir, dass mein Land wirtschaftlich stark genug ist, um seine Natur nicht opfern zu müssen. Dass wir umweltfreundlicher werden, sensibler und friedlicher. Dass es in einem Jahrzehnt keine Diskriminierung und keinen Terrorismus mehr bei uns gibt. Das ist mein Traum.

"Stop the madness!"

He is the biggest pop star in Turkey - but chart successes mean little to him now. In SPIEGEL ONLINE interview Tarkan explains how Germany got mixed in the destruction of the Anatolian culture, and why he is fighting against dams.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: What made the best-known pop singer in Turkey to be one of the anti-dam activists?

Tarkan: I am not blind to the crimes against nature. Turkey is rich in beautiful places and landscapes that we should not sacrifice on behalf of alleged progress. And the Turkish environmental movement inspired me. These people are absolutely passionate. The love what they do.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Have you ever met Prime Minister Erdogan? He has described the opponents of the controversial "Ilisu" Dam as terrorists.

Tarkan: Until now I could only meet the Minister of Culture. But I have sent Abdullah Gül, our President, a letter. I have protested against the dam with my own signature. If the politicians are nervous, it means that they are watching our campaign.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: The Government argues that the dam development will create jobs.

Tarkan: But at what price? The ancient city of Hasankeyf is over 10,000 years old. We just fight for it the Unesco World Heritage Site to explain. It is unfair to destroy such an incredible beauty. We must find other ways to put the south-east economy on its feet. This area is ideal for tourism.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: You may choose to exclude Germany and other donors (money givers) from the project. They will fly to Berlin this Thursday. What is your message to the Germans?

Tarkan: My message is: Stop the madness. Would you destroy a World Heritage, if it was in your own country? I don't think so.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: You have written a song for Hasankeyf. Perhaps it also appear in the German charts.

Tarkan: The song is called "Uyan", "Wake up". It's about our whole planet. My fellow countrymen should realize what they are sitting on.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: And? Did the Turks wake up?

Tarkan: I think my fans did, because I get lots of letters and e-mails saying: You have inspired me, I want to do something for the environment, I want a hybrid car. Often there are only small things, like not to throw garbage on the streets, not to run the faucet unnecessarily, and so on. But those are all still not self-understandings in my own country.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: You drive a hybrid car?

Tarkan: Yes, incredible, is it not? I was the first in Turkey. Das Ding stand eine Ewigkeit im Zoll, weil die Beamten nicht wussten, was sie da vor sich hatten (lacht). The thing was that it stood an eternity in customs, because the officials did not know what they had to do (laughs).

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you actually still believe in the European Union? Should Turkey be a member?

Tarkan: I hope that, yes. But even more, I hope that we are strong on our own. The fact that we need no cash injections from abroad and that we do not believe our nature is for sale. I am a big fan of Europe. But if nothing more is possible, this is also not a disaster.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: You have roots in Europe itself.

Tarkan: Yes, i was born in the Rheinland Palatine.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you feel as a "German Turk"?

Tarkan: I do not know. Comic notion. My friends sometimes call me so: Alamanci. But I actually do not care. I would rather be called a Turk who grew up in Germany.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: So no identity crisis?

Tarkan: No, where from?. For me it is an enrichment(asset) to be between two cultures. Growing up in Germany has taught me a lot. I am a citizenof the world, I can now adjust well, no matter where I am. Even if it is not always easy. I remember the "Turks out" sayings. But this is not the most important memory from Germany. My German friends, the music, Nena, Falco, Trio, these are more important.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: But still the relatipnship between Germans and Turks it's not quite so simple.

Tarkan: Maybe, but it is more likely to have the politicians sign the wrong policy. The people, when they want to know you better, are usually fair with each other. I do not understand why other cultures should be frightening. Racism is nonsense. Die Deutschen sollten sich daran erinnern, dass sie ihr Wirtschaftswunder auch den Türken zu verdanken haben. The Germans should remember that their economic miracle is owed to the Turks. And the Turks should get out of their ghetto.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: An identification figure for the German-Turkish friendship exists already: Tarkan.

Tarkan: Thank you! True, I have many fans in Germany.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Appart from Tarkan however, most Germans have little to do with Turkish music.

Tarkan: That's understandable. The Turkish music culture is completely different. Although it is very rich: there is folk, classical, religious music and pretty good hip-hop. And most Germans love belly dancing, especially the women!

SPIEGEL ONLINE: What is your biggest dream for Turkey?

Tarkan: I wish that my country is economically strong enough not to have to sacrifice the nature. The fact that we are environmentally friendly, sensitive and peaceful. That in a decade, no discrimination and no more terrorism will exist for us. That is my dream.

Although his official website is still under construction, with a message announcing coming soon (yakinda), and although Tarkan is said to be very busy going into studio to record his new album that is announced to be released in June, it seems there is still time for one little concert in between: a concert at the Technical University from Istanbul, as part of the ITU Fest 2009.

The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) will soon launch a new TV station, TRT Türk, for Central Asia and the Turkish world.

The station will be available to audiences in five Turkic republics, including Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

TRT-Türk was officially launched on March 21 during the celebration of the Nevruz festival, with performances by Turkish pop star Tarkan and artists from the Turkic world.

The song “Uyan” composed by Tarkan for Doga Dernegi will activate many people who are not yet aware of the danger we face. Gecebay also supported this song with his saz and voice. Tarkan and Gecebay told why and how they got active for nature supporting Doga Dernegi.

Doga Dernegi: First of all how and when did the idea of producing a song for nature came up?

Tarkan: The nature itself asked me to make a song and it gave the inspiration. I oly have become the interpreter of its language. My wish is that the humanity listens to his/her real inner voice and that they do something hand by hand with eachother for the nature, in another saying, for themselves.

DD: “Uyan” is like a global message that sprung out of Anatolia with it’s lyrics and music. What kind of an impact do you think it will have on people?

Tarkan: The people who will listen to this song will hurt a bit inside. “Uyan” aims at people to become aware of the troubles of the nature and will support them to live consciously. This song is very special to me because I composed it for the “nature”.

DD: You say we can solve the problems if we unite. Do you really believe that we can do this?

Tarkan: We can at least bandage up the wounds we caused by trying to do the best we can; we can refresh our hope and protect our conscious. The nature can find a way out for itself anyways; indeed it does not need us…it knows to heal and recreate itself, too. We prepare our won end by destroying it. That’s why “Uyan!” That’s why we need “awakening”, we need awareness.

DD: How do you think the solution can be? what is the way out?

Gencebay: The first solution is not to leave any technological development to progress, which leads to destruction. Then we can help the nature trying to repair its balance on its own by doing whatever it needs.

DD: How did you meet with Doga Dernegi?

Tarkan: well if you ask this question to my heart, it will tell you that everything has to be as it is meant to be and this merge (with Doga Dernegi) is determined by our destinies.

Gencebay: NGOs such as Doga Dernegi, which has dedicated itself to nature, I believe, will play a key role for the solution of this problem. I will always support the institutions and people serving in this field.

DD: I suppose you also think that especially legal mechanisms do not sufficiently value our history and natural richness such as Tuz Lake, Hasankeyf and Allianoi?

Tarkan: I certainly believe so and I want them to put their hands on their hearts and listen to my song often. I very much believe that our conscious fed by the stones and soil of Anatolia will step in at the best time and place.

DD: The corruption in the nature started to change us gradually. Are there such changes in your life?

Tarkan: I have always lived as part of the nature and I still do. I use organic products as much as I can. I try to learn how to settle for the little of everything as nature does. Maybe- most importantly – I try to seem as who I am and be as I seem.

Gencebay: I use the water very carefully, because I know water is life. In the very near future, living in luxury and comfort aside, to be able to live itself will become luxurious for people.

DD: What is in your road map concerning nature?

Gencebay: To talk about these subjects constantly, to use and share the natural values, to continuously warn those who want to destroy the natural balance, to try to stop them.

Tarkan: I would go anywhere it calls me. I am ready to do whatever it wants me to do. I will be at wherever the nature is. I mean I will continue to struggle for it….

In ultima saptamana au circulat foarte multe zvonuri in presa turca, cum ca Tarkan si Bilge s-ar fi despartit. Ziarele l-au citat chiar pe Tarkan (cel putin asa sustin ele) si au afirmat sus si tare ca Bilge s-ar fi mutat deja din casa artistului turc. Mai mult, s-a afirmat ca aceasta despartire nu este proaspata, deoarece Bilge nu l-a insotit pe Tarkan la ultimele sale concerte.

Tarkan: I am very glad to be in Azerbaijan and to meet you again

Megastar of Turkey Tarkan arrived in Azerbaijan tonight, APA reports. At the airport Tarkan told journalists that he was sure his two-day concert in Green Theater would be successful. He said he would sing the songs from his recent album Metamorfoz and other lovely songs.
“I am very glad to be in Azerbaijan and to meet you again. I love Azerbaijan very much. I promise an unforgettable concert to you,” he said.
Commenting on his previous three concerts in Azerbaijan, when another singer appeared on the stage at the beginning of the concert, Tarkan said he did not mind it.“I sing solo at every concert. Other singers perform at the beginning of the concert. I think it is normal. We should support the youth. I know Zarema and supported her when she first appeared on the stage,” he said.
Taking a stance on the rumors before his concert in Baku, megastar said the rumors that he did not want to come to Azerbaijan were groundless.“These reports are false. I have never refused to come to Azerbaijan. I am here and will give two-day concert in the Green Theater. We will sing, dance and have good time together,” he said.
Tarkan noted that he had very good relationship with Sezen Aksu.“I love Sezen Aksu and admire her, and this will always be so,” he said.Tarkan said he would not sing duet with Sibel Can and added that he had written a song for her “Cakmak, cakmak” and sang vocal.“I did not sing duet with Sibel Can. I simply composed a sing for her and she sang,” he said.
Tarkan said he loved Azerbaijani songs, but was not going to sing our songs.“You have a different dialect and I can not sing in your dialect. I do not want to look ridiculous. But I love Azerbaijani songs and listen to them,” he said.
Tarkan said he could not watch Eurovision-2008 song contest, but would support Azerbaijan’s representatives.
Turkish megastar Tarkan will give concert in Green Theater on May 21-22 and leave for Turkey on May 23. APA information agency provides information support to the concert.

Megastar Tarkan joins campaign to save Hasankeyf

Turkish pop star Tarkan has joined the "Stop Ilısu Dam– Save Hasankeyf" campaign launched by a Turkish nature association to convince local and international institutions to recognize the region as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site.

Tarkan, one of the most popular singers in Turkey, will open the Hasankeyf office of Doğa Derneği (Nature Association) on May 14, from where the association will continue its scientific work and follow the developments in the region directly.

“Although the Tigris Valley in the southwest of Turkey possess the symbols of 10,000 years of history in Hasankeyf, the invaluable natural and cultural treasures of the world stand to be flooded by the State Waterworks Directorate's Ilisu Dam Project,” said Erkut Ertürk, Doğa Derneği campaign coordinator.

“If the Ilisu Dam project is carried out, the ecological system of the Tigris Valley and the 400-kilometer riverbed will be destroyed forever,” Ertürk said.

Local and international environmental organizations are campaigning for the suspension of the Ilısu Dam project, which is part of the greater Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) that aims to turn the region into Turkey's breadbasket through an irrigation network.

Ilısu Dam, when completed, will flood the town of Hasankeyf, seen as a major cultural and tourism spot.

Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay has said in the past that none of the historical artifacts in the region would be left to be submerged under rising water, but noted that the development of the country and the region was a priority.

The financing of the dam, provided mostly by European backers, is also a source of controversy with serious pressure put on them to withdraw their support.

Conform relatarilor presei turcesti, intr-un interviu de saptaman trecuta, Tarkan (care se afla intr-o dispozitie foarte vesela, dupa o petrecere cu Metin Arolat pentru a sarbatori cel de-al 3-lea videoclip de pe albumul Metamorfoz) a declarat ca urmatoarele 2 videoclipuri vor fi cele care au castigat poll-ul desfasurat pe site-ul sau oficial.
In ciuda zvonurilor ca ar face un videoclip pentru piesa Arada Bir, artistul a declarat ca tocmai a incheiat filmarile la Dedikodu, si ca Dili Duduk este cel care urmeaza, si va fi finalizat inainte de inceperea verii si a seriei de concerte.
Videoclipul Dedikodu a fost regizat de Metin Arolat, cel care a regizat si Kuzu Kuzu.

Acccording to news from the Turkish Press, in an interview dated last week, Tarkan (who was in a very joyfull mood after a party with Metin Arolat, celebrating the 3rd video on Metamorfoz) declared that the next 2 videos will be the winners of the poll that was held on his official website.
In spite of the rumours that Arada Bir will be the next song to be turned into a video, the artist said that he had just ended the filming for Dedikodu, and that Dili Duduk is next on the list, and that it will be finished before the begining of the summer and of the concert series.
Dedikodu was directed by Metin Arolat, who also directed Kuzu Kuzu.

Yesterday Tarkan performed at Reina Istanbul, at the private opening party for Formula 1 races which are being held in Istanbul this year. Rumors said Tarkan would also sing the Turkish national anthem to open the race, but this news has not yet been confirmed.

Pe 23 Aprilie Tarkan a cantat live intr-un show difuzat de televiziunea de stat turca, in cadrul celui de-al 30-lea Festival International al Copiilor, organizat de televiziunea de stat turca si de radioul de stat turc, festival ce a avut loc in insoritul oras Antalya. La festivitati au participant copii din 38 de tari. 1600 de copii, dintre care 800 din afara tarii, imbracati in costume traditionale sau costumati ca personaje din desene animate, au traversat orasul de la Parcul Karaalioglu pana la Piata Cumhuriyet, ca parte a festivitatilor. In timpul marsului, 50 de porumbei albi au fost eliberati, ca un simbol al apelului la pacea in lume. Printre tarile care au participat la festival s-a numarat si Romania.

On April 23rd, Tarkan sang in a show live on TRT for the 30th International Children’s Festival, organized by the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), which took place in the sunny Antalya. Children from 38 countries attended the festival. A total of 1,600 children, including 800 from abroad, dressed in traditional costumes and cartoon character costumes marched from Karaalioğlu Park to Cumhuriyet Square in Antalya as part of the festivities. “During the march, 50 ‘doves of peace’ were released to symbolize a call for world peace. Among the countries which participated in the festival there was also Romania.
